Outline of Roles and Responsibilities:

The Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) seeks a Software Test and Verification Lead to join the Space Systems Department. The selected candidate will be part of the ES51 Software Systems Engineering Branch, providing Software Test Engineering support to the Space Launch System Flight Software project. The role involves leading a technical group to perform independent engineering assessments of software development activities and products, from requirements through flight operations, to enhance flight software quality and reduce the risk of in-flight, software-induced operational anomalies.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting internal and external project-level reviews, working groups, milestone reviews, peer reviews, test readiness reviews, and other project meetings associated with the software delivery lifecycle.

  • Providing regular reports to the NASA customer.

  • Institutionalizing robust and efficient software test methodologies and ensure consistent application by the T&V team.

  • Identifying and proactively communicating potential risks to project management.

  • Developing strategies to mitigate risks and improve efficiency.

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to design and develop software test packages that verify and meet mission requirements.

  • Coordinating and maintaining test lab environments to support dry run and formal testing activities.

  • Creating estimates for milestone completion and test package delivery.

  • Facilitating internal reviews and meetings to ensure milestone delivery and quality.

  • Travel may be required, less than 25.



These responsibilities will be ongoing as the SLS architecture evolves and the program progresses through various phases, reviews, and schedule milestones.

A degree engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 9 years of experience, Masters with at least 13 years of experience, or BS with at least 15 years of experience in Software Development environments.

Requirements:

Knowledge of:

    • Project Management

    • Software and hardware integration/emulators

    • Software certification

    • Software/hardware risk mitigation (HITL development testing, certification testing, software certification plan development, etc.)

    • Ability to read and comprehend software written in C or C++, including interfaces such as MIL-STD-1553, Ethernet, TCP/IP, and RS-422

    • Experience evaluating test data, correlating results with expected outcomes, and investigating anomalies

    • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python or in developing scripts using UNIX or Windows scripting tools for test automation, product release, and regression testing

    • Experience developing and executing test procedures, including pre-test configuration (e.g., instrumentation, data acquisition, software loading/configuration) and post-test tasks (e.g., data archiving and analysis) within a simulated environment

    • Experience with requirements management tools such as IBM DOORS or DOORS Next Generation (DNG)

    • Experience with GitHub
  • Ability to complete tasks, multitask, and be proactive

  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, communication, and customer relation skills - must be able to clearly define and describe technical subjects to peers and customers across various engineering disciplines

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook)

  • Proficiency with issue and project tracking software (JIRA)



Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of:
    • NASA NPR 7150.2D

    • Core Flight System (cFS) platform

    • Development and testing of real-time software for embedded control systems

    • Agile or other similar software development methodologies

    • CMMI and other process improvement models

    • Aerospace or aviation avionics closed-loop control systems

    • Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and practices

    • Understanding of UML (Unified Modeling Language) for software design representation

    • Proficiency with data reduction and manipulation tools

    • Ability to write and maintain technical documentation, including test plans, test procedures, and formal verification reports

    • Ability to review program/project documentation and provide feedback from a software testing perspective

    • Solid understanding of systems and software engineering processes, including Agile practices and object-oriented development methodologies

    • Flight avionics test data analysis

  • Familiarity with software development toolsets; experience with the Atlassian suite (e.g., JIRA, Confluence) is a plus

  • Systems engineering experience with highly complex systems that operate with real-time, embedded software control

  • Ability to become knowledgeable of software lifecycle development phases, including major products (ICDs, IRDs, CM, Plans, Requirements, Testing, etc.) for aerospace systems



Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
