Boeing has won the US Air Force Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) competition and will produce the world’s first sixth generation fighter jet at our facility in Berkeley, MO (St. Louis surrounding area). This program adds to the rich legacy of defense products that includes F-15, F/A-18, T-7, and MQ-25.
The Boeing Test & Evaluation Team is looking for an experienced System Safety Engineer that will be responsible for performing safety hazard analyses using risk analysis tools. These tools will include risk management assessments of complex system designs throughout the life cycle of a product and program. Focus will be on product and service safety. This position will support leadership and individual contributors to help them understand their responsibilities of Safety Management System (SMS) requirements and guidelines. Also required will be the ability to influence and further collaborate with a cross section of program and test capability fields to develop and provide product and service safety requirements early in the design process and throughout the lifecycle of the program.
The System Safety Engineer will work with BT&E Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) advising managers and workers on safety risk management, helping other individual contributors with SMS concerns and issues through Speak Up and Enablon reporting tools. Lead Safety Action Groups (SAGs) and promote SMS competencies, training and communication of SMS philosophies.

Position Responsibilities:
Apply engineering and management principles, criteria, and techniques to achieve acceptable risk within the constraints of operational effectiveness and suitability, time, and cost throughout all phases of the system life-cycle
Identifying potential hazards and assessing the likelihood and severity of risks associated with a system
Review engineering design specifications, test operations, change proposals, product and lab safety systemic risks and hazards
Analyzing systems and designs to identify vulnerabilities and ensure safety features are integrated
Conduct effectiveness reviews to verify corrective action were put in place and systems are operating as intended
Developing and implementing safety plans, procedures, and protocols
Working knowledge of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), MIL-STD-882 E risk analysis tools
Work with lab test capabilities to support program test requirements
Participate in incident investigations and determine root cause/corrective action analyses
Lead Safety Action Group (SAG) meetings
Support test preparation and operations including test hazard analysis, risk and identification of mitigations
Apply an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify a lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions.
Resolves cross-functional technical issues
Additional Potential Responsibilities:
Leverage the Boeing Problem Solving Model (BPSM) and Bowtie risk analysis tools to conduct risk analysis to find root cause or risk of a SMS trigger item
Support hazard analyses & incident investigations addressing both isolated and systemic root causes
Practice of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), MIL-STD-882 E risk analysis tools
Work with customer authorities
Leverage metrics and data analytics in identifying priority focus areas from a safety risk and mitigation standpoint
Support integrated Perform to Plan efforts and safety reviews to inform leadership team on gaps, opportunities, and accelerated improvements
Evaluates customer and /operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces
Performs various analyses to optimize total system of systems and/or system architecture
Performs analyses for affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, system security, regulatory, certification, product assurance and other specialties quality factors into a preferred configuration to ensure mission success
Develops the planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of requirements management processes, tools, risk, issues, opportunity management and technology readiness assessment processes
International System Safety Society (ISSS) Certified System Safety Professional
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
3+ years of experience with systems safety engineering
Excellent Communication (verbal and written) skills
Experience using Microsoft Office products (TEAMS, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel) is required
Experience performing analyses, preparing presentations and reports for program design reviews, and test/mission readiness reviews
Experience presenting oral and written system safety and risk presentations to peers, program management, senior leadership, and customers

Summary Pay Range for Mid-level (Level 3): $97,750 – $132,250
Summary Pay Range for Senior level (Level 4): $119,850 – $162,150
