Position Overview

The Senior M365 Engineer (Exchange Primary) will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, securing, and supporting Microsoft 365 services, with a particular emphasis on Microsoft Exchange Online and Exchange Server environments. This position requires deep technical knowledge, a strategic mindset, and a commitment to delivering top-tier messaging and collaboration solutions. The Senior M365 Engineer will work closely with IT leadership, end-users, project managers, and cross-functional teams to ensure seamless communication platforms that drive productivity and security.

Key Responsibilities

  • Exchange Online and On-Premise Administration: Lead the design, deployment, migration, configuration, and on-going management of Microsoft Exchange Online tenants and on-premise Exchange Server infrastructure (2019). Ensure high availability, data protection, and business continuity for all messaging environments.
  • M365 Ecosystem Expertise: Provide technical leadership and support for the broader Microsoft 365 suite, including but not limited to Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and related security and compliance features.
  • Security and Compliance: This role works closely with IT, legal, and business teams to implement policies, monitor risks, and support secure information handling across the organization. Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) and company policies.
  • Incident Management and Troubleshooting: Serve as the subject matter expert for escalated incidents related to Exchange and M365 messaging platforms. Diagnose and resolve complex issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Manage Exchange Support: Directly manage and lead the Exchange Support team. Ensure the team is able to successfully support the environments.
  • Documentation and Knowledge Sharing: Produce and maintain comprehensive documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and knowledge base articles. Mentor junior engineers and provide training to end-users on Exchange Online and M365 best practices.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Partner with business stakeholders, security teams, and IT peers to gather requirements, design solutions, and deliver projects on-time and within scope.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay abreast of new features, updates, and best practices within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. Recommend and implement improvements based on emerging technologies and evolving business needs.

  • Reliable, secure, and high-performing Exchange Online and on-premise environments.
  • Successful completion of migration projects with zero/minimal business disruption.
  • Comprehensive documentation of designs, configurations, and operational processes.
  • Effective incident response and problem resolution for messaging-related escalations.
  • Ongoing skill transfer and development of junior staff and end-users.
  • Continuous improvement recommendations for messaging and collaboration services.

What you need to succeed (minimum qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of experience in IT, with at least 4 years in designing, supporting, and administering Exchange environments (on-premise and Exchange Online).
  • Expert-level proficiency with PowerShell scripting for Exchange and M365 administration.
  • Extensive experience with hybrid Exchange environments, directory synchronization (Azure AD Connect), and authentication technologies.
  • Strong understanding of M365 administration, including Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and related security/compliance workloads.
  • In-depth knowledge of Exchange-related security, such as EOP, ATP, DLP, MFA, and conditional access policies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in troubleshooting complex mail flow, delivery, and client connectivity issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong project management abilities, including scoping, scheduling, and driving deliverables.
  • Microsoft 365 Certified: Messaging Administrator Associate (or comparable certifications) strongly preferred.
  • Consistently prioritizes safety and security of self, others, and personal data.
  • Embraces diverse people, thinking, and styles.
  • Possesses a high school diploma, GED, or high school equivalency.
  • Is at least 18 years of age and has authorization to work in the United States.
